The Map

Drat! I cannot find our world map. I used it as a teaching aid a conference kids' program and now it is GONE. It is a colourful kid's map. There is little text, save each country's name. It used to hang on our family room wall. The kids would look at it often, mostly pointing out that they live down here (in Melbourne, Australia). My eldest liked to identify countries that he knew, for example England, where his aunt lives. It was also a fabulous teaching tool for talking about different countries as they came up in conversation or on the news. It was easy too, already hanging, ready to find out if a country is; on the equator, in South America, borders Cambodia, or any other interesting fact about the world. Our journey of developing a sense of world-mindedness was easily aided by a map.
I need a new map. I'll keep you posted.

  1. It's a shame. The kids are always very pleased with themselves when they can find a country that we've heard mentioned on the Radio over breakfast - South Africa, the United States, China, and the rest. Somehow Google Maps just isn't the same.

  2. My boys are a little older than your crew - but we had a really fruitful time recently when - like you not having a map to hand -I googled to show then somewhere we were talking abut, and used a Peters Projection. This led to all kinds of questions and discussion about our association with 'big' and 'centre' and importances, and also what it meant to be on the edge or the margin...

  3. The map was the first (and so far only) obligatory wall decoration in my daughter's room. I had her saying "New York" when pointing at it at age 1, but we're still having trouble associating friends and family with continents. The distance is a tricky concept when they're only a taxi and plane ride away.
